CHARACTER
Name: Kanji Tatsumi
Canon: Persona 4
Age: 15 years old
Timeline: Post true end
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: n/a

Personality: Kanji is introduced as a delinquent and rebellious character in his teen years, resembling a bully for his looks and as a violent guy who prefers to talk with his fists. He’s known for getting into fights and in trouble with the police and also for being able to take down a group of biker gangs. However, he’s misunderstood since the very beginning of the story and is actually a more complex character. The student, being only in his first year in high school and missing classes almost the entire year has been living in Inaba since he was born and Yukiko (a member of the team who lives in Inaba since she was born and knew Kanji) even mentions as a kid, he was nice and kind and had no idea he would grow up like this. When the investigation team starts suspecting Kanji of being the next one that will be thrown in the television world, when they start to track him down, they find him talking with Naoto (a young detective with a male appearance investigatng the kidnappings that is later revealed to be a girl) and being flustered, nervous and intimidated. When questioned about his activities with the detective after they meet up, he goes into a rage and scares them away, misinterpreting their intents and believing they were talking about the matter of him “going out with a boy”.

He's somewhat tormented by his feelings and when stuck in the television, it’s needless to say, it comes out as shocking that his shadow (that is, an exaggeration of one's hidden emotions) reveals itself to be extremely… camp, so to speak. The show that is projected from his mind and the shadow himself have a very big symbolism, such as the roses (Which are symbolism for a subgenre of Japanese boy's love, Bara) surrounding him, and his dungeon being a bath house, which is known to be reserved for members of the same sex. Given that shadows are an exaggeration of one's inner self, Kanji can’t help but reject it, resulting in the shadow reaching its true potential, as they do. His sexuality and manliness is called into question here, and the denial is strong as the shadow talks about how scared of girls Kanji is and how they call him a queer for his tastes, since his hobbies include sewing and knitting. He’s also interested in cute things and he keeps up this "manly" façade to scare bullies and to be taken as “manly”. However, there is much more to that and we get to know it’s not a matter of being scared of girls or preferring boys, he’s “scared shitless of being rejected”, in his own words, thus setting his sexuality as one who doesn't show preference for either gender. All he wished was for someone to accept him for who he really was all that time but he ended up pushing everyone away and making them dislike him by putting up the show that he was someone who in the end wasn't him.

Finally accepting his shadow and achieving his persona, a manifestation of one's soul with the ability to fight, Kanji asks to join the investigation team, wanting to find his kidnapper. He also admits he told Naoto, who at the time was presenting as male, that he wanted to meet her again when they went out before he was kidnapped, being those the reasons why his confusion toward his own sexuality began. It’s thanks to hanging out and opening up to the investigation team that Kanji gets back to attending classes regularly and improves a better behavior, being influenced positively by them.

When the player decides to begin Kanji’s social link, which is, essentially, a way to get to know a certain character better and help them with their lives, he interprets it as the protagonist only facing him due to the fact Kanji had been falsely accused of bullying, which Kanji denies, saying he's more of the type to go after bullies himself. The protagonist agrees to believe him and they start to hang out. As we proceed with his social link, we find out Kanji is an extremely nice and friendly person in his own way. It's revealed that Kanji lost his father early on, his mother being his only remaining family, and as such he spends all his time stressing out over her well being and admitting the reason why he scared biker gang away (the thing which started a chain of events, which ended in Kanji further distancing himself from people) was so his mother could rest, since they’d keep making noise at night. As the route progresses, the protagonist and Kanji meet a kid crying over losing a friend’s doll, whom Kanji immediately tries to help by finding it, an effort that is sadly in vain. Saddened by being unable to help, Kanji questions the kid as to what kind of doll it was, making an intricate replica with various accessories himself. As the kid had mentioned enjoying dolls as well, Kanji made a second one, just for him, since he figured he'd want one as well. Later, they find the kid once more, he asks Kanji to make another doll for his mother. When Kanji comes back to him, he presents and gives him a variety of dolls with extreme details that even the protagonist gets surprised over.

This is when his hobby starts to get known around and his mother even asks him to sell his works in her shop. However, due to a misunderstanding, the police questions Kanji and the protagonist about what they’re been doing with the kid, thinking they’re bullying him. That’s when the protagonist gives Kanji that final push toward acting like himself instead of his facade, and the teen reveals his interests to the police, admitting to having been making dolls for the kid all that time and how they’re “so cute they’ll give you diabetes, the deadly kind”. The cops are shocked and finally leave Kanji alone, in disbelieve for what just happened. This is when Kanji thanks the protagonist for helping him and tells him how he felt relieved for finally letting it out and knowing he can stop hiding his interests.

When finishing his social link, Kanji visits the protagonist's house and tells him how his father talked to him before dying about how he had to be strong, and how he thought strength was something that could only be physical, going to extremes such as looking fearsome, becoming muscled and bleaching his hair. However, he found out thanks to the time they spent together that this was not the case, and what his father meant with strength was facing his own fears and having people accept him for he is, and that now he wouldn’t hold back and be himself.

Thanks to this, Kanji’s persona becomes stronger, finally acquiring his full strength. With a silly smile, he calls the protagonist his “best bud” and offers him a cute strap, and finally holds a sewing lesson in his house, saying it would be simple and not hard to learn, and it’d be really cute.

Since his introduction, it's apparent that Kanji is actually a sweetheart and that he’s actually also one of the most sensible people in the group. He tries his best to protect everyone and to not let his reputation ruin anyone’s. He looks up to his senpais, is in constant silly fights with Rise and Teddie, two fellow members of the team, and always plays around with them. In such situations such as the beauty pageant in which the boys have to crossdress, Kanji is the first one to agree to go with it, showing no shame or embarrassment, something he’d definitely deny to participate if he hadn’t met the group and undergone immense growth, donning a Marilyn Monroe outfit to the pageant. Depending on the situations, he’s very straightforward and honest and he learns to find no need to hide what he feels (although he’s a pretty bad liar already). He’s also kind of slow and stupid sometimes, not understanding at first certain obvious situations going on due to being a bit dense.

In the final act, when they face the final boss before the protagonist leaves the town, he shows no fear, especially knowing he’s standing with his friends, fighting with all his might until the very end. Like everyone else, he doesn’t hesitate to jump and save the protagonist from a fatal attack, in which he falls to anyway, and, in some odd limbo, when the protagonist is cheered on by his completed social links, Kanji tells him to stand up since he knew he wasn’t that weak and he looked up to him, so things couldn’t end like that. Sharing everyone's joy of finally clearing the television world and facing the truth after defeating the final boss, they say their goodbyes, Kanji being part of the crying party (while claiming he’s not crying and that something got in his eyes). This is when the protagonist enters the train which starts to leave as tries to keep up with it in a jog, saying their final goodbyes, knowing their friendship is strong and all they went through and the memories they share will never be forgotten.

Abilities: Kanji holds the power to summon the persona Take-Mikazushi. He’s the Emperor Arcana and his attacks are mostly physical and lighting-based. He’s also skilled at attacking with chairs and shields and anything big which can be handled in a similar fashion. He has an incredible physical strength and is a skilled fighter.

First Person:
[ The screen flickers as a close-up face seemly lost and confused of a blonde male shows up. ]

Uh, is this thing on…? Whoa!

[ He steps back, surprised with the sudden realization the video is starting and showing himself. He clears his throat and forces a smile, in a complete vain as his frown thickens.]

H-Hey, I hope someone is there… Yeah, okay, hello! Uhm… I’m kinda… lost here, yeah. When is the next train comin’? I kinda shouldn’t be out so late but it seems I fell asleep in the train and ended up in this hell of city.

[ He laughs nervously, scratching the back of his head.]

So uhmm… if anyone out there could help out, that’d be really cool! S-So yeah, uh… I guess that’s it.

Third Person:
With droll falling from the corner of his mouth, Kanji slept in when a sudden movement woke him up, almost making him fall from his seat. Where was he? He didn’t remember taking the train… Or maybe he did on his way to the neighborhood town to get fabric? Nonetheless, that stop was far from familiar to him and being already nighttime, it was difficult for him to tell from the window where the hell he was.

Stepping out of the train, the young teen took a quick glance around him to find out he had no idea where he was. Posters and signs in front of him would talk about a certain Ruby City, which he was absolutely sure it was not part of the stops in the train he’d usually catch. Examining them better, he read about the existence of a watch/communicator/what-the-actual-fuck?

“Please announce yourself promptly in order to receive aid and information…”, he repeated what the poster said, clicking his tongue at the end. “’Re you for real? Is this a frickin’ joke?”, kicking the ground, he turned around and rested his back on the wall, searching the clock in his pockets and finally finding it. Just like the poster said, there was an option for video, another for voice and the final one for text.

“Tch, might as well give it a try”, he thought loudly, hitting the video button and starting communication. “Hey, what the hell is up with this Ruby City business? What kind of help am I supposed to get from here even? I just want to know when is the next damn train coming! Be a buddy and help out a lost dude, will ya?”, he smiled, trying to be more appealing for an answer that way, even though he couldn’t help his speech.
